Mrs A. G. Mitchell, who has been staying in Masterton, has returned to Hawera.

Mrs B. Tyrrell, Sydney, has been staying with Mrs J. Dove, College Street, Masterton. Mr and Mrs J. W. Hayes, Waimate, will attend the Bunny-Kebbell wedding at Masterton tomorrow. Miss P. Grainger, Auckland, who has been staying with Mrs J. Grey, Cambridge Terrace, Masterton, has left on a visit to Inglewood. A London cable states that Charles Horace, elder son of the late C. J. Zino and Mrs Zino, of Madeira, has become affianced to Marjorie, youngest daughter of the late Robert Nairn and Mrs Nairn,, of Hastings, New Zealand.

Miss Elaine Hamill (Taihape) who enjoyed considerable success on the Australian stage, is in the company of “Money Talks,” which opened its season at the Lyceum Theatre, London, on May 4, with Sir Seymour Hicks and Jane Carr in the leading roles. Recently, Miss Hamill took the part of Phyllis in John Van Druten’s “After All.” The play ran at the suburban Q Theatre, which changes its programme weekly. Paddy Turner, the 11-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Turner, Masterton, gained first place at the anniversary celebrations of the City of Sydney Eisteddfod in the verse-speaking section under 12, open to both boys and girls. The adjudicator said that her voice was beautifully produced and there were great possibilities in her future career as an elocutionist. Paddy Turner also competed in a Deanna Durbin singing contest, and, according to the last advice from Sydney, was among the finalists. Mrs Turner has been on a visit to Sydney for some time. To raise funds for the Tinui Anglican Church bazaar, which is to be held later in the year, Mrs Hugh Morrison, Awatoitoi, recently held an enjoyable afternoon party. There were about 40 women present, and each one brought a contribution toward the bazaar stalls. Beautifully dressed dolls, needle-cases and sugar bag novelties were the order of the day, and all the gifts were greatly admired. Two. amusing competitions were held. By popular vote, Mrs Norman Groves’s needlecase was judged to be the best. Mrs R. Pilmer and Miss O’Brien tied for first place for the dressed doll, and Mrs W. Mitchell and Mrs J. O’Brien also tied in the sugarbag novelty class. Afternoon tea was served, Mrs Morrison being assisted by her daughters, Misses Nancy and Muriel Morrison. ENGAGEMENT. The engagement is announced of Una Clara, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Larsen, Mauriceville West, to Guy Denis Fredricksen, of Hastwell, Eketahuna.
