EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the weekly card tournament held by the Featherston Fire Brigade in the Anzac Hall, there being eight tables. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Miss Nix 1, Miss D. Chisholm 2. Men: Mr Fairbrother 1, Mr Jackson 2. Consolation: Mrs Watson. STABLEFORD GOLF COMPETITION. The Stableford competition held on Wednesday afternoon resulted as follows:—A grade: Miss D. Bloxam, 37, receives 3 points; Miss J. Ruane 35, 2 points; Mrs Davis 32, 1 point. B grade: Miss M. Tocker 1, Mrs Lovegrove 2, Mrs Staples 3. The second round for the Challenge Cup will be played next Wednesday. PERSONAL. Mrs Cutler, Auckland, is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs R. F. Watson. RACING CLUB MEETING. The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club was held on Wednesday afternoon. There were present Messrs Q. Donald (chairman), A. C. Pearce, R. A. Donald, Roy Donald, H. Lawson, C. J. Nix, D. C. Collins and T. Benton. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. W. Card, D. H. S. Riddiford and W. Howard Booth. The chairman made reference to the loss sustained by the club in the death of Mr Hugh Morison who had been a steward and vice-president for 44 years. A motion of condolence with the relatives was carried in silence. The financial statement showed the receipts since the last meeting to have been £BO 16s lOd. Accounts amounting to £169 10s 7d were passed for payment. A letter was received from the New Zealand Racing Conference in regard to the club’s application for dates for the 1938-39 season.
The New Zealand Racing Conference forwarded suggestions in reference to the equipment in the jockeys’ room, maiden races, and an eyesight test for judges. The Conference also wrote regarding the remount encouragement scheme; requesting the club to co-operate with the A. and P. Society in the matter. In connection with this proposal it was resolved that Messrs C. J. Nix and W. Howard Booth represent the club. A letter was received from an owner at a recent race meeting expressing appreciation of the splendid treatment accorded to his horse, his trainer and himself. He stated that he would do everything possible to popularise the club in his district.
The secretary was authorised to get a price for a new tractor. It was resolved that the course committee meet, and go into matters relating to the course proper. It was left to the chairman, Messrs C. J. Nix, and Roy Donald to attend to the ploughing of about 12 acres at the top of the course. OLD RESIDENT’S DEATH. The death occurred on Monday at the Wellington Hospital of Mrs D. Regan, an old Featherston resident. The late Mrs Regan had been in ill health for some time, and her death was not unexpected. Her husband, the late Mr Daniel Regan, predeceased her a few months ago. The funeral took place at the Featherston cemetery on Wednesday. The Rev Father Carmine officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs C. W. Houghton, G. Houghton, Harold Houghton, Frank O’Reilly, Archie O’Reilly and Philip Regan.
