TE WHARAU
LOCAL CLUB WINS DONALD CUP. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual inter-club match between Te Wharau and Homewood for the Donald Cup was played on the Homewood links over the week-end, in splendid weather the links being in first-class order. After a very enjoyable match the visitors proved too superior on the day and annexed the cup by 2 up. In making the presentation of the cup to the Te Wharau team Mr I. Tomlin (club captain) referred to the very sporting spirit of the Te Wharau players, and the many happy associations they had had in previous matches. Mr F. Tatham then handed the cup to Mr S. Gray, president and club captain of the winning team, who suitably replied. In the men’s singles Homewood won four games and Te Wharau 6 Games. In the men’s fourball each team won 2 games, one game being all square. In the ladies’ contest both singles and four-ball were halved. The following are the results of the games, Homewood players being mentioned first in each instance: — Men’s Singles.—F. Tatham beat E. Nitz; I. Tomlin lost to H. Paku; C, Maunsell beat W. Kummer; T. Paku lost to M. Paku; W. Taggart lost to N. Kummer; C. Taylor beat N. Foreman; V. Walker lost to S. Gray; R. Tatham lost to C. Scholefield; J. Bird defeated A. McGregor; W. Paku lost to J. Bannister. Men’s Four-ball.—F. Tatham and I. Tomlin beat E. Nitz and H. Paku; C. Maunsell and T. Paku halved with W. Kummer and M. Paku; W. Taggart and C. Taylor lost to N. Kummer and N. Foreman; V. Walker and R. Tatham lost to S. Gray and C. Schofield; J. Bird and W. Paku beat A. McGregor and J. Bannister. Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs F. Tatham defeated Mrs Nitz; Mrs Bird defeated Miss Lucas; Mrs C. Taylor lost to Mrs Schofield; Mrs J. Tatham lost to Mrs Foreman. Ladies’ Four-ball.—Mrs F. Tatham and Mrs Bird defeated Mrs Nitz and Miss Lucas; Mrs Taylor and Mrs J. Tatham lost to Mrs Schofield and Mrs Foreman. Next Saturday the fourth round of the trophy competition will be played. The following is the draw: Men. —N. Foreman v N. Kummer; Gray v Vennell; Schofield v Winter; A. McGregor v Nitz; Cotter v J. Bannister; H. Paku v T. Weston; R. McKinstry v P. Kummer; F. McKinstry vM. Paku; W. Kummer v R. Bannister. A. McGregor is to play E. Nitz in a Nimmo Cup challenge game. Ladies. —Mrs Read v Miss McGregor; Mrs Kummer v Miss M. Taylor; Mrs McKinstry v Mrs Schofield; Miss Lucas v Mrs J. Bannister; Miss Bannister v Miss Taylor; Mrs Nitz v Miss Vennell; Miss Dickason v Mrs R. Bannister; Miss Buckeridge v scorer; Mrs Foreman and Mrs A. McGregor are to play a Kummerstein Cup challenge match. On June 5 the first round of the mixed foursomes will be played for trophies donated by Mr and Mrs B. F. Schofield. Entries for the foursomes must be in the Secretary’s hands by Saturday next in order that the handicaps can be allotted and the draw made.
On Monday June 6, the day on which the King’s Birthday will be celebrated, the third annual golf tournament will be held on the links, commencing at 10 o’clock sharp. An attractive programme has been drawn up and liberal prize money will be given.
On Saturday last A. McGregor defeated H. Paku in a Nimmo Cup match and Mrs Foreman defeated Miss Lucas in a Kummerstein Cup challenge game.
