The carnival queen contest held under the auspices of the Catholic churches of Carter ton, Grey town, Featherston, and Martinborough, was brought to a successful conclusion last evening with a dance at the State Theatre. Mr J. G. Morris was an efficient M.C. The voting for the candidates continued until 11.30 o’clock, and ten minutes later Father Carmine announced the result, which showed that Miss Zena Freer, of Carterton, was queen of the carnival. The votes obtained by the various candidates were as follow: — Miss Z. Freer, Carterton .... 86,572 Miss McLeod, Featherston .... 80,023 Miss Sfewart, Martinborough 69,675 Miss Bouzaid, Grey town .... 41,588 The financial result of the effort was very gratifying to the promoters, the actual sum obtained being £1157 14s lOd. A coronation ceremony will be held at a later date. LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL. There was a large attendance at the weekly dance conducted by the Carterton . Labour Pfirty Social Committee in the Band Hall on Saturday evening. The music was supplied by the Te Tau Dance Band. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr Uprichard and Mrs Benge, and Mr and Mrs Rodgers. During the evening songs were rendered by Miss Madge Green and the “Olsen Aces” (Petone). Mr B. Challis capably carried out the duties of M.C. The efficient manner in which the sit-down supper was arranged was due to the energetic committee, Mesdames Oberg, Anderson, Benge and Green.
