BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
SATISFACTION AT PROGRESS
STATEMENT MADE BY ARCHBISHOP AVERILL
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 29.
Satisfaction at the progress made was expressed by the Primate, Archbishop Averill, at the annual meeting of the Auckland district branch of the New Zealand Bible-in-Schools League. He said there was reason for thankfulness at what had been achieved, but victory had not yet been won and agitation must be continued.
Archbishop Averill also pointed out that the existing authority of school committees regarding religious observances at the schools might easily be lost in the new Bill under the amended designation of school councils.
Canon W. W. Averill said if there had been any ambiguity in the Acts in the past it was obviously a duty to ascertain the will of the people and if necessary to do so by a referendum. If the result showed that the will of the people was favourable to the opening observances in schools then provision should be made before the Bill went to the House of Representatives.
