HOUSEWIVES’ NOTEBOOK
To save waste when using a fresh box of powder, insteading of tearing away the cellophane cover inside the box, puncture a few holes' in it with a needle. This will save the powder from wasting and act as a sifter.
When frying old tomatoes, sprinkle with sugar whilst they are being cooked. The sugar will make them taste like the best green-house tomatoes.
Apply liquid ammonia or a mixture of toilet vinegar and glycerine for the bites or stings of insects. If neither is at hand, apply blue-bag, damp.
To prevent moths from getting into your carpet, before it is put down, wash the boards over with turpentine. Moths dislike the smell of turpentine, and will not be likely to attack the carpet if the floor next to it has been washed over with it.
Wear a polishing pad on each hand when polishing a table. The part you have polished will not then be marked by being accidentally touched with bare fingers.
Wallpaper that is of a delicate hue can be cleaned if it is soiled in places by gently rubbing the soiled patches with a soft flannel sprinkled with plaster of Paris.
A bright idea for a nursery rug is to sew together enough felt of light blue colour to make a six-foot square. Next, cut some paper patterns in outline of cats, dogs, horses, tigers, etc., and paste them on to the felt and secure down with buttonhole stitch. They will look attractive if cut from red and. yellow flannel, and a few stitches are added with black and white thread to bring out the features of the animals. When making fig jam, do not add water to the figs, as this is one of the causes of fig jam mildewing on top.
