THE RUGBY GAME
WAIRARAPA COMPETITION MATCHES GREYTOWN SCORE SURPRISE WIN. CARTERTON SOUNDLY BEATEN. Surprise wins were again a feature of Saturday’s Rugby in the Wairarapa. Carterton suffered their first reverse of the season at the hands of Greytown, while Gladstone produced unexpectedly good football to hold Red Star to a draw. Old Boys had a day out against Martinborough, winning by a wide margin. Fast and interesting football was witnessed in all matches, which attracted attendances well above the average. Carterton and Masterton are now level at the top of the championship ladder. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. SENIOR. Greytown 16, Carterton 6. Gladstone 3, Red Star 3. Old Boys 31, Martinborough 3. JUNIOR. A GOOD WIN. GREYTOWN BEAT CARTERTON. Showing definite superiority in all departments, Greytown defeated Carterton 16—6 in a bright, fast game at the Carterton Showgrounds. Right from the start Greytown had the edge on their opponents and at no stage did Carterton shape like a winning side. The Greytown forwards worked much better in both the tight and the loose and their backs, well supplied with the ball, were a faster and cleverer combination. Greytown had all the better of the opening exchanges, and following a series of hot attacks, Flutey secured and potted a neat goal. Then Braggins nipped round the side of a scrum to score a good try, which Brunton converted, putting Greytown nine points to the good. Carterton took,a turn at attack but they found the defence too sound and just before the interval Nix broke away from midfield to score a fine try for Grey town. Play was fairly even for the first 20 minutes of the second spell but Parker further consolidated Greytown’s position with a fine potted goal. Carterton showed up in a much better light in the closing stages. Cook opened their account with an unconverted try and just before time Catt landed a penalty goal, making the final score Grey town 16 —6. HONOURS EASY. STAR AND GLADSTONE DRAW. Red Star and Gladstone played a hard-fought 3-all draw at Gladstone. Both teams turned on a fine brand of football and the game was productive of plenty of exciting incident. Gladstone were fairly successful in keeping play tight and preventing the speedy Star backs from showing their paces. The Star forwards went better in the loose but the Gladstone pack were superior in the tight and in the set scrums. Gladstone held a 3 —o lead at the interval, Wylie scoring an unconverted try. The pace was on throughout the second spell, Cross eventually making it honours easy with an unconverted try. Gladstone have been improving with every game and on their present form they are likely to have a big say in the decision of this year’s championship. AN EASY WIN. OLD BOYS HAVE DAY OUT. Old Boys had a day out at Memorial Park when they completely outclassed Martinborough to the tune of 31 —3. Old Boys were definitely on top from start to finish and it was only the efforts of the hard-working Martinborough forwards that prevented the game being too one-sided and uninteresting. For Old Boys Hatton (3), Martin, Bodie, Rayner and Taylor scored tries, O’Callaghan converting five. Brassell kicked a penalty goal for Martinborough.
