WAIRARAPA COLLEGE

BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET.

CONVEYANCE OF EVENING STUDENTS.

The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held last night, the chairman, Mr L. J. Taylor, presiding. Others present were: Messrs VI. A. Clarke, E. J. Wright, W. R. Nicol, A. T. Jackson. P. M. Smith and Mrs C. C. Jackson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. Donald and W. H. Jackson.

In his report for the month, the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, stated that since May 2 boys of the agricultural class have been going to Penrose Training Farm in small groups for a week at a time. A house social was held on April 30, and a school social on May 5. At the latter, opportunity was taken to farewell Messrs E. G. Hasell, S. A. La Roche and O. H. E. Yates. During the eight weeks that the library was open during the first term, a total of 1960 books (1626 fiction, 334 non-fiction) was issued. In order to develop an appreciation of music among the pupils, the Orchestral Society had kindly offered to give a concert on Tuesday evening, May 31. A small charge was being made for admission and any profit would go to the Assembly Hall furnishing fund. The Parents’ Association held a card evening on May 6.

The Director of Education, Mr N. T. Lambourne, wrote stating that no conveyance allowance was available for pupils attending evening classes. In the circumstances, he regretted that the board’s request for assistance to enable a service to run from Featherston to Masterton for the conveyance of evening class pupils could not be approved. As the result' of advice received from the Education Department regarding control of Wairarapa College, it was decided to hold an election for three parents’ representatives on the board on June 16. Nominations will close on June 9. The retiring members are Messrs A. T. Jackson, W. A. Clarke and L. J. Taylor.
