GREYTOWN

QUEEN CARNIVAL CONTEST. (“Times-Age" Special.) The following is the position of the queens in the Catholic Queen Carnival: — Carterton 48,031 Martinborough 47,874 Featherston 26,992 Grey town 19,282 MORISON’S BUSH FUNCTION. The Morison’s Bush Hall Committee held its first winter entertainment on Monday night when a dance and euchre tournament was held. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr H. Montgomery and his partner. The prizes in .the euchre tournament were won as follow: —Miss A. Steffert and Mr Howatt Ist, Mrs Grimstone and Mr McKay 2. PERSONAL. Mrs R. Gayfer, of Carterton, who underwent a serious operation at the Greytown hospital, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. A weekend visitor will be the Rev R. M. McDiarmid, who is director designate of missions for the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, and also the foreign mission fields in New Hebrides, India and China. Mr H. Whincop, of Te Kuiti, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs J. F. Wallis, of Kuratawhiti Street, Greytown. Mr Whincop was for many years manager of the local gasworks. GOLF CLUB DRAW. The draw for the first card of the bogey handicap to be played on Saturday is as follows: —Miss Nix v. Miss E. Gregor; Mrs Thompson v. Mrs Jury; Mrs Balfour v. Mrs Maddison; Mrs Bunny v. Mrs G. Ingley; Miss M. Collier v. Mrs R. Ingley; Mrs Gregoi- v. Miss I. Collier; Miss B. Haigh v. Miss Bouzaid; Miss B. Gregor v. Miss B. Feast; Miss M. Wood v. Miss J. Feast; Miss Eccles v. Miss M. Nix; Miss B. Kiernau v. another. Nomination fees for matches must be paid before cards can be accepted. THE LATE MR H. MORISON. There was an exceptionally large cortege at the funeral of the late Mr H. Morison. The service was conducted by the Rev. P. Karl Lilly. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Beu, P. Cooper, P. McLaren, H. McLaren, J. Anderson, L. Strung. The Masonic service at the graveside was conducted by the Wor. Bros. W. G. K. Wiggins and E. Graham. The large rjumber of wreaths testified to the esteem in which the late Mr Morison was held. Wreaths were received from the following, among others: Wairarapa Racing Club, Wairarapa Trotting Club, Wairarapa P. and A. Society, Meat Export Company, Greytown Masonic Lodge, manager and staff Levin and Co., directors Levin and Co., Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, Greytown. FARMERS’ UNION DIVISION. The Greytown branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting in the Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Beu presided over a good attendance of members.

Expressions of sympathy were passed with the family of the late Mr Hugh Morison, and with’ Mrs Stringfellow in the loss of her mother.

Mrs W. G. K. Wiggins, the secretary of the branch, was presented with a beautiful crystal salad bowl and shoulder spray in recognition of her faithful service as secretary of the branch for 11 years.

Mrs F. J. Brooks received a, dainty flower spray on her resuming her duties as tea convenor after a long period of indisposition. Mrs McMinn forwarded 1100 stamps and these are to be sent to the Children’s Home. Mesdames A. G. Nisbet and Straitton were elected new members, and Mrs T. Orr rejoined the branch. It was decided not to hold the children’s arts and crafts display this year.

The birthday party of the local branch was fixed for June 15.

Miss Higginson (Matron of the Greytown Hospital) gave an interesting talk on hei’ trip to Sydney with the New Zealand Returned Soldiers. Miss Higginson said she had been much impressed with the splendid comradeship between the members- of the contingent and with their excellent conduct. The memory of the parade on Anzac Day in Sydney would always be with her. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames McGarry, McKay, Tilyard and Wenden.
