CARTERTON
BIRTHDAY OF W.D.F.U. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very enjoyable function was held on Friday last, when members and friends gathered to celebrate the 6th birthday of Carterton Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The president (Mrs E. Allen) welcomed visitors from the Grey town and Featherston branches, representatives of the Provincial Council, the Women’s Institute, the League of Mothers, Farmers’ Union and Y.F. Club. An excellent programme was presented, the items being greatly appreciated. A two-act play produced by the Drama Circle was much enjoyed, those taking part being Mrs T. Mellish, Mrs A. Stretton and Miss Z. Abbott. Miss J. Knowles entertained with a tap-dance and songs were contributed by Mrs W. Daysh and Miss M. Thompson.
An amusing competition entitled a “Musical Wedding” was won by Mrs Graham (Greytown). Afternoon tea was served after which the president called on Mrs Arch Clark to light the candles on the birthday cake, which had been made and iced by Mrs L. Maitland. Mrs Clark congratulated the branch and wished it every success in the future. Mrs T. R. Barrer and Mrs C. C. Jackson also assisted with the blowing out of candles and cutting the cake and they also referred to the good work which was being carried out by the division. Other speakers were Mrs L. Aplin (Women’s Institute) Mrs W; Herdman (League of Mothers) Mrs Beu (Greytown), Mr J. Watson and Mr W. Thomas (Farmers’ Union). Mrs K. Reid made reference to the good work done by the past president (Mrs J. Standen) and, on behalf of members, presented her with a crystal salad bowl and servers as a small token of esteem. Mrs Standen very suitably replied. The president of the Garden Circle, Mrs Maitland, asked Miss Arcus to accept a beautiful handbag in appreciation of the splendid service rendered by Miss Arcus on behalf of the branch. Miss Arcus thanked members for their kindly thought. Mrs Allen referred to the artistic programmes, which Miss D. Rabbitts so kindly printed and designed for the recent ball, and she asked Miss Rabbitts to accept a small gift in appreciation. Shoulder sprays were presented;.to ” the lady speakers and a very happy gathering closed after singing the “Goodbye Chorus.” LADIES’ GOLF MATCH. The following is the draw for the match between the captain’s and secretary’s teams on Saturday:— Mrs Candy v Miss Berrill; Mrs Callander v Miss Fisher; Mrs Moon v Mrs. Orr; Mrs B. Booth v Miss M. Booth; Miss M. Campbell v Miss Welch; Mrs Murray v Miss Smart; Miss Armstrong v Miss Lamb; Mrs Robinson v Mrs Riggs; Mrs Brown v Miss Moody; Mrs P. Renall v Miss Peters; Miss Corlett v Mrs Cronin; Miss Stevens v Mrs Crawley; Mrs Forbes v Mrs Hornsby; Miss Freer v Miss Hamer; Miss Milner v Miss V. Corlett. The tea hosteses will be Mrs Orr and Miss Orr. BUILDING SOCIETY. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society was held last evening at Carterton when Mr L. H. Smart, chairman of directors, presided. Mr Smart reviewed the balance sheets of the No. 1 and No. 2 Groups at length. He pointed out that the No. 1 Group was now practically in its final stages as only a small balance in one loan remained unpaid. At the date of the balance sheet the amount was £l7 Os 4d, but some of this had been repaid since. The No. 2 Group was progressing rapidly, and £6,600 had been distributed in loans during the year. The repayment income was, of course, rapidly increasing and appropriations would gradually increase in number and amount each year. The gain in the profit and loss account during the twelve months had been very satisfactory, being £715 18s lOd, and the total credit was now £9,675 16s Bd. Mr Smart moved the adoption of the report and balance sheets, the motion being carried'unanimously. The retiring directors, Messrs L. J. Fairbrother, H. M. B. Trapp and C. Reid, were re-elected unanimously, and Mr N. C. C. Shepherd, of Featherston, was also elected to replace Mr J. W. Card who resigned from the board. Mr Geo. W. Sellar, Masterton, was Te-elected shareholders auditor at the same remuneration as formerly. The directors remuneration was again fixed at £75. Mr Smart conveyed his thanks to the directors and secretary for their work during the year, and the keenness displayed in the affairs of the society. A vote of sympathy was passed to the secretary in his illness, cn the motion of the chairman seconded by Mill. Hughan. An appropriation of £6OO was offered for sale by tender. Mr J. A. Russell, of Masterton, offered £lOO for £450 on three shares held by him, and was declared entitled to the appropriation. The remaining £l5O will go towards completing an appropriation obtained by ballot by a shareholder at the April meeting. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a successful meeting.
