At a private gathering yesterday, members of the Featherston County Council made a presentation of a handsome grandfather clock to the retiring chairman, Mr Q. Donald. Reference was made by councillors to Mr Donald’s valuable services during his long term as chairman.

A tour of the western portion of the North Island within the next fortnight is contemplated by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon M. J. Savage. He proposes to start his tour with a trip to Taranaki. Mr Savage’s tour will probably last seven or eight days. It will cover about 500 miles, embracing nine or ten electorates.

Captain A. H. Davey, who has been on holiday leave in Australia, has resumed command of the Awatea, which arrived at Wellington today from Sydney. Captain G. B. Morgan, D.S.C., who was in command of the Awatea in the absence of Captain Davey, returned to Wellington in the ship, and will take command of the Rangatira in place of Captain B. B. Irwin, who is going on leave.

The Minister of Agriculture, Hon W. Lee Martin, who is at present visiting Australia, will arrive at Auckland from Sydney by the Awatea on June 6. The Minister’s original intention was to return to New Zealand today after attending a meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council at Canberra and visiting the rural areas of New South Wales. Mr Martin has extended his visit by several days to enable him to investigate agricultural developments in some of the other States of the Commonwealth. Mr C. M. Turrell was last night elected chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, in succession to Mr D. J. McGowan. One of two members representing the payers of dues on British ships. Mr Turrell has been on the board for 19 years. There were two nominations for the position —Mr Turrell and Mr C. H. Chapman. M.P. In accordance with the board’s custom, a vote was taken on each nomination separately. Mr Chapman’s name was put to the meeting first; there were four votes for him and nine against. Mr Turrell was then elected unanimously.
