HOSPITAL LEVIES
THE BURDEN OF RATEPAYERS By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 24. “Not only are increases in the levy a hardship to ratepayers but they are also an embarrassment to the board who has to find the money, the method of raising it being fixed by law,” stated the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Rev W. C. Wood, at a meeting of the board His remarks followed receipt of a letter from the Manurewa Borough Council entering an emphatic protest against the “huge increase” in the hospital levy. It was stated by the council that, notwithstanding a reduction in valuation through a recent revision, it was called upon to provide an amount 22 per cent more than that of last year. To a small local authority with limited resources at its command the load of increasing hospital levies was becoming excessively burdensome and to bring the total rate within reasonable limits it was necessary to curtail the amount available for road and other essential services. It was decided to inform the Manurewa council that the board was in sympathy with any movement that would ease the situation for ratepayers.
