WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large and representative assembly from all parts of the district including Dry River, Kahutara and Martinborough on Thursday at the Memorial Hall to celebrate the third anniversary of the local Women’s Institute. The president of the branch, Miss Hanlon, presided and with the secretary, Mrs J. Priest, together with the members of the branch, worked assiduously to make the afternoon a most enjoyable one for the visitors. A large birthday cake, artistically decorated with the Institute colours and surmounted by three candles, the whole being the work of Mrs D. J. Mclntosh, was much admired. The ceremony of extinguishing the candles was performed by Mesdames McKenna (Kahtara), Taylor and Lamb (Martinborough). The cake was cut by the local president and served to the guests. Afternoort tea was provided and greatly appreciated. The following competitions and musical items were given during the afternoon:—Cake competition, won by Mrs Maxwell; a poi dance (single) was neatly executed by a party of Native ladies; a vocal item, nicely rendered, was given by Mrs Lovegrove the accompanist being Mrs lan Brickell; vocal trio, Mrs Cowan and Misses Tauran and Barclay; lucky seat competition, won by Mrs Jolly; pianoforte solo, Mrs McClelland; vocal solo, Mrs Murphy; ring competition, won by Miss H. Leach; musical ■ competition, won by Mrs Neal; Maori action song, Native party. The accompanists for the afternoon were Mesdames McClelland, Brickell and Misses Pirapi, Barclay and Te Whaiti. PERSONAL ITEMS. , Mrs Murphy, Carterton, has returned home. Miss Ransfield, Feilding, is staying with her cousin, Mrs Cowan. Misses Luke (Pirinoa) and McFadden (Tuhitarata) who had been on holiday during, the school vacation, have returned. Mrs A. Linton and Miss Linton, who have been in Auckland, have returned home. Mrs J. A. Sutherland, who has been visiting relatives, has also returned home. A wedding of considerable interest to the district will be solemnised at New Plymouth early next month, when Mr W. Trevor Hume, a member of a well-known family of the district, will be married. Mrs W. Hume, who, in company with her sister, Mrs Waddell, is on her way to England, expects to reach there early next month. Writing to relatives here she states that the trip so far has been uneventful. KILLER DOG AT LARGE. There is still no report of the capture of the Killer dog which is at large on the coastal stations, although the animal has been seen on more than one occasion during the past week. Unfortunately those who have seen the dog were without firearms. FINE WEATHER, SHARP FROSTS. The weather for the past week has been beautifully fine, although some sharp frosts have been experienced. GOLF CLUB. Beautiful weather was experienced on Saturday, the greens and fairways were in splendid order. The first round for the Campbell cup and Mrs Busch’s trophy was played. R. McDougall, who is showing exceptionally good form, handed in the best net score for the men and Mrs Tikao for the ladies. The first inter-club match of the season will be played at the weekend when the local club will meet Featherston here. Playing in the Doughty cup competition B. McMaster defeated J. Carter and T. Hume. The former lost to G. Munro, who also defeated J. Carter. R. McDougall beat M. Herangi and J. Riwai. PRE-SESSIONAL ADDRESS. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., addressed a fairly large attendance of electors in the Memorial Hall on Saturday. The •speaker spoke at considerable length on similar lines to addresses given in other districts. At_the conclusion several questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. A motion of thanks was moved by Mr Sutton and seconded by Mr Tangey, and carried unanimously. Mr J. Carter presided. CHEESE FACTORY. The local cheese factory has ceased taking milk for cheese making, but is now separating. Operations for the season will probably cease within the next week or so.
