GUN DOGS
TRIALS IN MASTERTON. MANY NEW COMPETITORS. The Wairarapa Gun Dog Club held its opening field trial of the season on Sunday last. Entries were exceptionally heavy, and the time available did not allow for all entries forthcoming to be accepted. Entries, particularly in puppy class, are suggestive of very keen competition throughout the season, and some very promising puppies performed. Many new competitors were in evidence and showed keen interest in proceedings. The birds used were in many cases non-flyers, which did not help the performance of the dogs, more particularly in the open classes. The results were as follow: — Open Land Trial—E. C. Fowler, Brown Retriever, "Waipori Lass,” 80 points, 1; G. F. Birkett, Irish Setter, “Basuto Belle” and W. O. Wilton, Irish Setter, “Daisy,” 78 points, equal, 2; W. Harding, Labrador, “Seafield Boss” and L. Meredith, Labrador, “Jin,” 69 points, equal, 3. Novice Land Trial. —J. Spinks, English Setter, “Starlight,” 90 points, 1; C. Smith, C.C.
