Third Grade Rugby.

In a third grade Rugby match on Saturday. Carterton defeated Greytown, 21/6, and in a fourth grade match Carterton defeated College, 21/3. Relief Worker Fined. Albert Te Rangi, 48, labourer, was fined £6 and costs in Wellington today for making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining benefit under the Employment Promotion Act. Malicious Telephone Calls. Within a period of 15 minutes the St John Ambulance station in Rutland Street, Auckland, received no fewer than eight telephone calls, and no sooner had one of the drivers answered than the person at the other end of the wire replaced the receiver. As the calls were received between 8.45 and 9 o'clock, at a time when the drivers were busily engaged in their normal routine, the hoax gave them a good deal of trouble. Roads Re-opened. A report from the Hawke's Bay Motor Co. states that the pre-flood route from Napier to Taupo was successfully traversed by one of its cars on Friday morning. Cars had been travelling via the Seafield and Rissington roads, but the car arriving on Friday had come via the direct route, and the driver stated that the road is now in good order for most kinds of traffic. The road from Napier to Taihape, via Kuripapango, is now open for traffic, according to advice received by the Automobile Association t11.8.i. The surface is in reasonably good order, although progress is naturally slow. Open Air Band Concert.

The Masterton Municipal Band continued its scries of concerts yesterday afternoon in the Park. The weather was fine but raw. and the Band had a large audience. The operatic selection. "La Regina de Golconda.” was given a splendid interpretation, the playing being crisp and tuni'eul. while a tine body of' tone" was maintained throughout. "Fleur-de-Lis,” an elegant Valse Lente, was exceedingly well rendered, as also was "Mercury." a meteoric trombone solo with a brilliant band accompaniment. The band was well balanced and well in tune, and from end to end the programme proved most entertaining. The band played under the direction of Mr G. W. Hutchinson.
