The veteran Neil scored over country at . Easter and has since trained on satisfactorily at Ellerslie.. Lacking the brilliancy of his early days, he is still a fine jumper, and is so well conditioned that he has possibilities during the winter.

The . Great Western Steeplechase winner, Possum, was lame on returning to the enclosure at Invercargill on Saturday. After his good showing at Riverton a month ago’both his jumping and galloping were disappointing.

Mrs S. Brown, who purchased the aged gelding Artful Dodger for £l5 last winter, intending to use him as a hack, decided later to put him into work with a view to racing him again. He was given to j. G. Farrell to train and has made good, as he won the hack hurdles at Wanganui in February and the hurdles at Waverley recently. After these performances he scored in the hack ' and hunters’ steeplechase at Wanganui on Saturday.

These successes, together, with two thirds, brought his stake winnings for

Mrs Brown up to some £440. After Saturday’s race she made Farrell a gift of the horse, and he intends to give him a race at either Foxton or Awapuni and then go to Ellerslie for the Great Northern meeting.

The two-year-old colt by Vaals from Thurence has had the name Talak claimed for him. He has been in work for some time at Ellerslie under the charge of W. McLaughlin, and has the appearance of a smart galloper.

Wee Pat, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Race in 1934, has been taken up again by A. Kemp. She looks in excellent trim to commence another preparation. During her retirement she produced a foal to Autopay.

Naughty Marietta has been turned out on her owner’s farm at Auroa for a well-earned spell of six weeks. She ■revealed fine staying qualities this season and may reach ’ good company in the next term. The four-year-old daughter of Resinous has more than paid her way with three wins, three seconds and three thirds to her credit since September. .

Kinloch, owned by Mr A. A. Stichbury, who secured two successes with Silver Fox at Nelson and Blenheim, has returned to work under H. Pritchard’s care at Trentham.

The Brisbane Cup winner, Spear Chief, is regarded as the best stayer in Brisbane for many years and a likely Melbourne Cup horse'next spring. He is a son of Spearfelt, the 1926 Melbourne Cup winner.

Wild Career has earned £1055 in stakes this season and £855 has been won'during the past five weeks.

The Defoe—Giglot two-year-old Selkirk, who had his first race at the Manawatu autumn" meeting, • but ran very greenly, has improved out of all knowledge^ip i .the..past and mere is ’ ii’otnihg gallo'p'ing better at Awapuni than this .shapely youngster. Selkirk is to race at Foxton next week and, if he leaves the barrier smartly, he will give the maidens something to think about. He comes from a great winning family, being related to Ammon Ra; Gallio, Prodice and Co.

Catalogue, who has been up to the collar since , last June, has been treated to a well earned spell. The Winter Cup winner was a / good moneyspinner during the term and last March held the Awapuni mile and a quarter record for an hour and a half until Stretto hoisted new record figures. He was unable to manage the Wanganui track last week and two thirds were the best he could produce.

Cuisinier, engaged in the hack sprint at Awapuni on Saturday had not previously raced. A three-year-old bay gelding, he is a half-brother by Peach Brandy to the useful Leo Colossus, his dam being the Quarantine—Miss Detonation mare Miss Quarantine, a member of the family that the late Mr D. Buick used with considerable success. Rangitiro came from the family, also Aurora Borealis. Cuisinier is being raced on lease by Messrs C. K. L. M„ and N. M. McKenzie.

Padishah and Pladie gave a faultless display over seven hurdles at Hastings on Tuesday. Padishah has the reputation of being the best jumper seen in the Bay for many years. He may race at Hastings, then at Trentham and Riccarton, or he may be sent to Australia.

While many of the progeny of Beau Pere showed excellent form in two-year-old events this season, Mr G. R. Macdonald was unfortunate with the filly he purchased at the sales. Now named Submit, she is from Timid, an imported mare by Kildare II from Ardesia, by Spearmint from Flowerer, by Persimmon. She met with a mishap and she never got past the preliminary part of her education. She was sold a few days ago to Sir Charles Clifford, and she will join the matrons at the Stonyhurst Stud, where her English blood lines should make her a success.

According to a Riccarton report, C. C. McCarthy has recommissioned the Wellington-owned Screamer, who was gelded during his long spell. Argentic is to be brought in again next month.

The yearling by Roydon from Helen Gold, bought at Trentham in January by Miss M. C. Wilson, has furnished into a solid colt. In addition to Monastic, who is to be raced at Trentham, .Miss Wilson has in work two fillies by Lord Warden, from Amourette and Love of Silver respectively.

Three English mares bought by Mr E. Steele at the last December sales served to English time have all had foals at the Elderslie Stud. Falcon, a well-bred mare by Flamingo (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas) from the classic winner Lammermuir, has a colt foal to the St. Leger winner Sandwich. Doretta, who received a good advertisement last week when her three-quarter brother, Mr Grundy, won the Chester Cup, has a filly by Portlaw. The French-bred Karlova, by Clarissimus, has a filly by Dark Legend. All the mares have done exceptionally Well since arriving at Elderslie.

Bfioni is a useful type of jumping horse who may show some form before long. A five-year-old by Sandstar, she has had only eight races and although there was not a great deal of merit in them she finished three times .fourth at Egmont and Wanganui. Brioni looks the right type to make a steeplechaser. She is trained at Hawera by E. Fryer for the Auckland sportsman Mr W. Scholium. MANAWATU MEETING STF.EPT.FS TO ROYAL BANQUET.
