A rodent inhabitant of the basement of the Christchurch Commercial Travelllers’ Club met a sudden and tragic ending when he accepted a tempting invitation to go for a ride on the belting driving the machinery of the central heating system. He had the satisfaction, however, of temporarily putting the plant out of order and of causing a commotion among some of his human enemies on the upper floors. Cases of rats and mice causing power failures by getting into generators are, of course, not uncommon. They have also been known to set automatic fire alarm systems in action.
