WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HASTWELLS MEETING. In the absence of the president, Mrs Broadbent presided at the May meeting of the institute, there being a fair attendance of members. Mrs H. Paterson gave a very interesting talk on her trip to Washington as New Zealand representative at the Conference of Associated Countrywomen of the world which was held there. Mrs Paterson in her talk took members to various institutes in Canada, including Stoney Creek, the first Women’s Institute in the world; to the conference and to the garden party which was held at White House. At the conclusion of her address Mrs Paterson was tendered .a very hearty vote of thanks. The competitions of the month resulted as follows:—Seniors: Lamingtons, won by Mrs J. Dick, with Miss A. Dick second, and Mrs Broadbent third. Orange cake (juniors): Miss H. Madsen 1, Miss I. Madsen 2 and Miss O. Halberg 3. The competition for the best flower in the garden resulted: Mrs Elliott and Miss H. Madsen equal 1, and Mrs Caseley 3.' Mrs Paterson and Mrs K. Henshaw were accorded votes of thanks for judging the competitions. The report on the council meeting held at Carterton was read by Mrs Broadbent. A game conducted by Misses H. and L. Madsen was won by Mrs W. Bishop, Miss O. Halberg being second, and Mrs Dick, Mrs Ngatuere and Mrs K. Henshaw third. The hostesses were Mrs Ngatuere, Mrs Burt and Miss Fredrickson. GLADSTONE GATHERING. . At the monthly meeting of the Gladstone Women’s Institute, held on Thursday, Mrs McKay presided over a fair attendance of members. Miss Walters gave a very interesting demonstration of floral work, concentrating upon the wiring of flowers, shoulders sprays and decorated bowls. Parcels of warm clothing for distribution by the District Nurse were brought by members. The annual potato competition was won by Mrs P. Cooper who grew 501bs from three seed potatoes. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Senior: Jar of peaches, Mrs P. Cooper, 1; Mrs Smith 2. Bloom: Mrs Bartholomew, 1; Mrs McKay, 2. Juniors: Lemon honey: Miss Wyeth, 1; Miss J. Bubb, 2; Bloom: Miss Bartholomew, 1; Miss J. Bubb 2.
