BADMINTON
INTERPROVINCIAL TOURNEY.
By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N., May 20.
The committee of the Manawatu Badminton Sub-association has arrangements well in hand for the interprovincial tournament to be held in the A. and P. Produce Hall at the end of this month. The tournament,, the largest of its kind in the Dominion, is of much importance, as each district in the North Island, with the exception of Waikato, is sending four men and four women of its leading players to compete. As each has to play nine matches the tournament calls for stamina and considerable physical endurance.
Newcomers this year are Auckland and Taranaki. Because of the large numbers taking part in the tournament it has been found necessary to divide it into two sections, the A section consisting of Auckland, New Plymouth, Wairarapa and Wellington, and the B section of Wellington B, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui and Manawatu. Last year Wellington won, with Manawatu second; this year there will be much keener competition, as Auckland and Taranaki are sending strong teams. The Auckland players are Mrs Wren, Misses Ramsay, Wade and Hensen, and Messrs Wilson, Anderson, Hull and Shale. Misses Ramsay and Wade are well-known tennis players. P. Hawksworth, New Zealand champion, and Spedding, runner-up, of Taranaki, are expected again to try conclusions, as they are in the same side of the draw. J. Neile, ex-New Zealand champion, and E. Roussell are expected to represent Wellington. Of the Manawatu players, C. Dunn, Levin, is showing good form at ’present. The selectors for the North Island team will be present at the tournament.
