CARTERTON

SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) A successful shop day was held yesterday under the auspices of the St Mark’s Church Ladies’ Guild at the Band Room. A varied assortment of goods was offered and commanded a ready sale. The financial result of the effort was very gratifying to the promoters. BIBLE SOCIETY MEETING. A meeting, under the auspices of the Carterton British and Foreign Bible Society, was held yesterday afternoon at the Manse, when the Rev R. Byers presided. The various collectors submitted the' result of their canvass for donations do the cause arid were thanked for their efforts. The collections were in the vicinity of £22 and were regarded as very satisfactory. Those present were afterwards entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs Byers. SPORTS SERVICE AT CHURCH. On Sunday, May 29, a special sports service is to be held at the Presbyterian Church, Carterton, when the Rev Ralph Byers will deliver the address. It is expected that there will be a large attendance of those who are interested in various brancjtes of sport. NATIONAL PARTY DANCE. A dance under the National Party was held on Thursday evening and proved very enjoyable. The M’s.C. for the event were Messrs V. J. Ashton and Jack Manley, while the music was supplied by an orchestra. A euchre tourney was also held for nondancers. The committee provided an excellent supper, this being a feature of these gatherings. OBITUARY. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital of Mrs Eileen Ainsworth Bannister, at the age of 52 years. Mrs Bannister, whose husband resides in London, had been a resident of Carterton for some years, and was a sister of Mrs T. J. Collerton,' of Garrison Street. She had been ill for about nine weeks. Besides her husband she leaves one son, Albert (Peter) and a daughter, Agnes.
