HAMUA GLEE PARTY
FINE CONCERT IN OPERA HOUSE LARGE AND ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE Popular entertainment of great merit was provided by the Hamua Glee Party and other local artists at a concert held in the Opera House last night in aid of the Otaki Children’s Health Camp, and the Te Ore Ore Dental Clinic. An enthusiastic audience packed the hall, and many were unable to gain admittance
Old and new melodies and graceful poi dances were featured by the Hamua Glee Party, in concerted and individual numbers. The younger members of the party soon won the hearts of the audience, as, with evident enjoyment, they followed the actions of their elders.
New to Masterton audiences was Mr Arthur Kay, who presented a number of “hill-billy” songs. Mr Kay, who played his own accompaniment on the guitar, was recalled again and again. Two talented young dancers, Miss Nola Graham and Velma Price, appeared in solo items. Little Miss Graham was fairy-like in the doll dance and Miss Price performed a spirited Spanish dance with equal skill.
Two present-day song-hits, “Make a Wish,” and “Was it Rain?” were effectively sung by Mrs E. Oliver, the popular Masterton soprano'. Appearing in grotesque costumes, which-he changed with amazing speed, Mr Harry Hall, an old favourite, soon had the audience laughing at his comic songs and patter. Another extremely popular humorous interlude was provided by Mr Vin Wilton and his backchatting ventriloquist doll. Perhaps one of the most popular performers of the evening, especially with the children, was Teddy, Mr Sid Gerand’s clever little dog, which went through a series of amazing tricks, including balancing, hurdling and skipping, and even saving his prayers. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr J. Robertson, M.P., expressed thanks to the performers and all others who had contributed to the success of the concert, from which, he understood, the Te Ore Ore Dental Clinic, and the Children’s Health Camp would benefit to the extent of about £25. Mr Robertson said the same concert was to be presented in Carterton in about a fortnight’s time.
