SALE OF LIQUOR
IN GOLF CLUB PAVILION. FINE IMPOSED AS WARNING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Two constables went out to the Paekakariki Golf Club on April 3, took part in a game, and had no difficulty in purchasing liquor, costing 3s, in the pavilion. They saw other people also purchase liquor, the secretary being in charge of it. The incident formed the subject of a prosecution of the secretary, Geoffrey John Warring, before Mr Goulding, S.M., today. It was stated that the premises were searched on warrant and 30 bottles of ale, one of whisky and a number of empties seized. Warnings had been given to clubs which were in the habit of allowing the offence to to creep in. It was urged by counsel for Warring that the latter’s position was only honorary and that there had not been any suggestion on his part of selling liquor for gain. The Magistrate said that as a warning to other clubs he would impose a fine of £5.
