PLAIN SAILING

MASTERTON- BOROUGH COUNCIL. VOTES OF CONFIDENCE. “We know each other so well now that the next three years should be plain sailing,” observed the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, at the statutary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night. Mr Jordan congratulated councillors on their vote of confidence by the electors and'also extended a warm welcome to Councillor G. W. Morice, who was elected to the vacancy caused by the resignation of Councillor A. Rippon.

In congratulating Mr Jordan on his re-election, Councillor W. Kemp said; “We would like to congratulate you on putting up such a good fight against such formidable opponents.” (Laughter).! They were all very pleased, he added, to see Mr Jordan back again. They had got on wonderfully well together during their past term .in office and he was certain that the opposition to Mr Jordan at the recent election in no way reflected upon his efficiency as Mayor. Councillor Kemp said it was the first time in the history' of Masterton that all the retiring councillors who offered themselves for re-election had been returned to office. He felt they would all regret the absence of exCouncillor Rippon. Councillor Morice said that with the help of the Mayor and councillors he felt sure he would soon get into the running and he hoped he would be of some use to the council. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr Rippon expressing keen appreciation of his years of community service.

The following committees were elected:

Works and Finance: The Mayor (chairman), Councillors W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, Trevor Beetham and G. W. Morice.

Gas and Abattoir: Councillors A. D. Low (chairman), A. T. Jackson, Trevor Beetham, G. D. Wilson and the

Mayor. Parks, Halls, Band and Cemetery: Councillors G. D. Wilson (chairman), H. E. Gardner, W. White, R. Russell, J. Ninnes.

Library: Councillors W. Kemp (chairman), H. E. Gardner, R. Russell, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice. Councillor W. White was re-elected deputy-mayor.
