PERSONAL

Mr W. S. La Trobe, until recently director of technical education for the Dominion, who has retired on superannuation, left Wellington today for Auckland, where he will in future reside.

Mr William Park, one of Palmerston North’s best known identities and mayor of the city from 1893 to 1895, died in Palmerston North yesterday. He was in his eighty-third year. Mr Park came to Palmerston North in 1883 from Timaru and Hokitika. Up to a few days ago he was in good health, but was removed to hospital following a sudden illness. Mr Park was born at Sawyer’s Bay, Port Chalmers, in 1856, and when 27 years of age set up in business as a bookseller, stationer and news agent at Palmerston North. He had held seats on various local bodies.

At a largely-attended congregational meeting of the Chalmers Presbyterian Church last night, it was decided to extend a unanimous call to the Rev Malcolm Wilson, M.A., a New Zealander, who is at present ministering at York Presbyterian Church, England. Mr Wilson graduated at Otago University, and took his training at Knox College, Dunedin. He then went to Westminster College, Cambridge, to complete his training. Returning to New Zealand, Mr Wilson ministered at Huntly, Waikato, for three years, and he then returned to England. For the past five years he has -been minister at York.
