COUNTY BRIDGES
PAST POLICY CONFIRMED PROPOSED NEW STRUCTURES AT BIDEFORD. Following on a deputation which waited on the Masterton County Council at a recent meeting concerning the construction of two bridges over the Wainui-o-mapu Stream at Bideford, the council decided to give consideration to a revision of its policy in regard to bridge construction and reconstruction, prior to making a decision as to how the council’s contribution should be made. In view of the council’s policy of levying rates on a differential basis over ridings certain legal difficulties were involved and the council decided to obtain legal advice on the matter. The opinion confirmed the past policy of the council in regard to the financing of all bridges. As to the construction of the two bridges over the Wainui-o-mapu Stream a suggestion put forth at a special meeting of the council last night that the settlers concerned should be assisted by providing £6OO from the general account and the balance provided between the riding funds and the settlers was not supported. It was finally decided that the County Clerk (Mr J. C. D. Mackley) should ascertain if the finance could, be arranged with a security given over the whole of the Upper Taueru Riding and that upon receipt of advice, if favourable, the matter of obtaining the authority of ratepayers in the riding to the raising of a special loan for the purpose should be proceeded with.
