SEVERAL MEN GET GAOL SENTENCES OBSTRUCTION AND ASSAULT CHARGES (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, May 16. The sequel to the brawl in Queen Street on Saturday evening, when, because of the hostility of the crowd to the police, reinforcements had to be rushed from headquarters, was heard this morning, when eight men who were arrested, appeared before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M. Two of the men, who the police said had started the trouble, Charles Hoskin Bickerton, aged 23, labourer, and John Stack Fleet, aged 24, bushman, were dealt with.

Bickerton, for obstructing and resisting the police, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. He was also ordered to pay for damage to a taxi amounting to £5 7s 6d, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Fleet, for assaulting a police sergeant and resisting him, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Thomas Samson Ewen Callender, aged 22, was sentenced to three weeks’ prison for assaulting a constable and was admitted to probabation for six months for using obscene language. John Morgan, aged 42, fireman, who punched an arresting sergeant, was sentenced.to six weeks’ gaol for obstructing the police and to six weeks for resisting, the sentences to be concurrent. George McKenzie, aged 28, seaman, was fined £lO, or three weeks’ gaol, for obstructing a sergeant; two assault charges against him were dismissed. Three other men were remanded for one week on charges of obstruction and assault.
