LOCAL ELECTIONS

USE OF PRIME MINISTER’S NAME. AUCKLAND EXPLANATION. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. In his denial that he had taken part in last week’s local elections, the Prime Minister (the Rt Hon M. J. Savage), was today upheld by the Auckland branch of the Labour Party. Attention has been drawn to newspaper advertisements published a’ week ago containing a message under Mr Savage’s name urging citizens to work and vote for all Labour candidates. However, it was revealed today that the quotations were taken from a message issued by Mr Savage on the occasion of the local polls three years ago, when he was still Leader of the Opposition, and were used last week without his knowledge. He had been asked earlier for an election message, but gave a definite reply that he aid not wish to take any part in local elections. The local Labour Publicity Committee thought no harm would be done nor objection raised by reiterating a three year old statement.
