AIR DEFENCE CRISIS

INQUIRY DEMAND PRESSED IN BRITAIN CHAMBERLAIN GOVERNMENT’S DILEMMA THREAT OF PARTY DEFECTIONS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, May 14. The “Daily Mail” says that owing to the feeling. in Parliament, the Secretary for Air, Viscount Swinton, several days ago placed his resignation in the hands of the Prime Minister, who refused to accept it, but after the debate in the House of Commons on the air defences, the Government faces a crisis more serious than after Mr Anthony Eden’s resignation. Mr Chamberlain’s advisers contend that the Government cannot agree to the air inquiry which both the Conservatives and the Labourites demand, as it would delay the Air Ministry's work. However, if Mr Chamberlain refuses, over a hundred Conservatives will be confronted with the alternative of abstaining from an important division or voting against the Government. Some believe a further vote can be averted if Viscount Swinton and Lord Winterton resign, necessitating farreaching reconstruction in the Cabinet. Mr Chamberlain will consider the position at the week-end. The “Daily Herald” construes a visit by Lord Baldwin to Mr Chamberlain as being due to an appeal for the assistance of the former Prime Minister. VISCOUNT SWINTON NO COMMENT ON SUPPOSED RESIGNATION (Recd This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, May 15. Lord Londonderry, with whom Viscount Swinton is spending the weekend in Ulster, stated: “Lord Swinton will make no comment on his supposed resignation.”
