PERSONAL

The Hon H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, is visiting Auckland in connection with the bakers’ dispute. The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, arrived at Auckland on Saturday and visited the Hobsonville air base. He will visit North Auckland this week.

The Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, arrived at Auckland from Ngatea on Saturday and spent the week-end in Auckland. He will speak at several country centres before returning to Wellington on Wednesday night. Mr K. W. Cumberland, who was recently appointed lecturer in geography at Canterbury University College, has arrived from England to take up his position. Mr Cumberland, who conies from Bradford, is a graduate of University College, London. Professor G. Smith, professor of botany at Cornell University, United States, arrived at Auckland by the Monterey on Friday from San Francisco, accompanied by Mrs Smith. He is to spend nearly three weeks in the Dominion, partly on holiday and partly to collect information upon native plants. The Rt Rev H. St. Barbe Holland. Bishop of Wellington, is making a good recovery, following his recent accident, although he is still receiving medical treatment. Acting on medical advice, he will not fulfil any engagements for a month, and all correspondence and matters of urgency are to be handled by the Vicar-General, the Ven Archdeacon Bullock.
