HINTS ABOUT THE HOME. Curdled mayonnaise need not be thrown out. Try whisking it quickly, and there is a great likelihood of it becoming smooth again. If this remedy fails, add a teaspoonful of hot water and beat quickly. If these two suggestions fail, break a yolk into a basin, season, and work in a teaspoonful of oil. Mix well into the curdled mixture and the mayonnaise will be quite all right. A good idea when mixing mayonnaise is to work in the oil slowly, drop by drop at first. Then it can be increased gradually in quantity whilst stirring all the time. To clean gilt frames, sponge them over with oil of turpentine or spirits of wine. Just wet the sponge enough to remove the dirt, and leave the frames to dry. Be sure not to wipe them.

If you have steel knives that are not in use, wrap them in tissue-paper and lay them away. This will prevent them from rusting and save the bother of cleaning them when they are required once more. To remove grease from a stove, apply dry soot well over the greasy parts. Then rub on blacklead and the spots will disappear at once. When starching the collars and cuffs of shirts, rub them over with an old toothbrush dipped in starch instead of placing them in the solution. The starch will thus be prevented from coming into contact with any other part of the shirt.

When sponge cakes have been made without butter, they should always be cooked in a hot oven, otherwise a sticky sponge is the result. Too slow or too long cooking will most certainly spoil them. Before applying plate powder to your silver, moisten the cloth with toilet eau-de-Cologne. This will make the brilliance of your silver last much longer.
