WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT OPAKI. The usual monthly meeting, of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held recently at the home of Mrs Wingate. Several visitors were present and were heartily welcomed by Mrs Buick, the president. A report on the Bush-Wairarapa Federation meeting was read by Mrs Wingate. A most interesting talk was given by Mr C. Bannister, one of the five survivprs of the pioneer families of the “fifties.” The early history of the district was related by Mr Bannister, whose story of his personal experiences was followed with keen interest. Mr Bannister gave translations of local Maori place names and indicated their correct pronunciation. A very hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mr Bannister, who replied with Maori salutations. The competition for the best vegetables was won by Mrs' Harris, Mrs Beetham being second and Mrs Wyeth third. Mrs Wingate received a gift for her first grandchild, with many congratulations. Mrs Jaine, past president, and Miss Robinson, secretary, were also presented with tokens of regard. KAITUNA-FERNRIDGE. The monthly meeting of the Kai-tuna-Fernridge Women’s Institute was held in- the Kaituna Hall on Friday last. Miss L. Shaw (president) presiding over a fair attendance of members. During the afternoon Mrs McKay gave a very interesting talk on her trip from New Zealand to Scotland. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
Mrs J. Welch read a splendid report on the Federation meeting held recently at Carterton.
The competitions for the month resulted as follow:—Seniors: Jam, Mrs Pringle 1, Mrs J. Welsh 2; juniors, pikelets, Miss L. Pain 1, Miss P. Welch 2. The hostesses for the'afternoon were the Misses P. Welch, L. Pain and J. Taylforth. CARTERTON The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held on Thursday. There was a large attendance of members, Miss O. Wolters presiding. In an effort to raise funds to send a delegate to Federation meeting, it was decided to hold a competition for an iced cake, which Mrs L. Sorenson kindly offered to make. An invitation was received from the W.D.F.U. for two members of the Institute to attend their birthday party, Mrs A. Pink and Mrs L. Aplin expressed their willingness td attend. Mrs H. Knutson gave members a full and interesting report on the Feredation meeting held in Carterton last month. It was decided to hold the Birthday Party and Husbands’ Night on Thursday, June 9. Mrs Napier, of Eketahuna, offered hints and demonstrated pastry making, which was much appreciated by all present. A bag competition resulted as follows: —Prettiest, Mrs H. Hughan; novelty, Mrs A. Pink; economical, Mrs A. Adams.
