Minister's Joke.
At a civic reception accorded the Minister of Labour, the Hon H. T. Armstrong, in Napier, speakers made reference to his excellent service in the role of Minister and to the capable manner in which he handled his duties during his term of office. ‘‘We don't build monuments to the memories of people until they are dead,” said Mr Armstrong in replying subsequently. “When I hear such nice things being said about me I am inclined to put out my hand to see if I am still alive.” (Laughter.)
Halfpennies Scarce. The reduction in the price of petrol to Is Hid a gallon has introduced a problem to many petrol retailers of obtaining sufficient halfpennies in order to give the necessary change, for very few motorists offer the exact cash. One Auckland petrol station proprietor stated that he had used 10s in halfpennies during the afternoon in giving change, and as a result he had exhausted his supply. He had then been compelled to owe customers the necessary halfpenny when that coin should have been included in change. Some Auckland petrol stations, however, were still charging the old rate on Saturday.
