SHOP ASSISTANTS
HEARING OF DISPUTE. The hearing of the Dominion shop assistants’ industrial dispute was begun yesterday in the Second Court of Arbitration at Wellington. Mr Justice Hunter presided and associated with him were Messrs A. W. Croskery (workers’ representative) and V. Duff (employers’ representative). Mr F. D. Cornwell, advocate for the workers, read to the court a statement covering 66 typewritten sheets, dealing with the matters in dispute between the parties. These included the proposed exemption from the award of travellers, speciality salesmen and collectors substantially employed outside their employer’s of female assistants receiving £3 10s a week or more and of male assistants receiving £6 a week or more. Other clauses not agreed to in conciliation council referred to classification and proportion of employees, hours of work, annual holiday, overtime and transport allowance.
Mr T. O. Bishop is appearing as advocate for the employers. At the conclusion of his address, Mr Cornwell called evidence in support of the points raised, and had not completed his case when the court adjourned till 10 o’clock this morning.
