MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. WERAITI HILL IMPROVEMENT. The chairman, Mr W. I. Armstrong, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council, held yesterday afternoon. Others present were: Councillors H. H. Mawley, Goi« don Lee, P. R. Welch, J. W. Colquhoun and G. Moore. The Engineers, Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt, advised that the estimated cost of completing the work of improving the Weraiti Hill road was £4,703 4s. The estimated cost of the deviation on the Te Ore Ore-Bideford Highway was £1,175 17s 6d.
A letter was received from the District Engineer stating that the Main Highways Board had approved of a subsidy towards the cost of the preparation of the engineerihg plans for reconstructing the Tauetu to Blairlogie section of the Masterton-Castle-point Highway. It was reported that the Public Works Department had approved of the proposals for the formation of the Waitoru Road and under the revised estimate the Government would be required to find £1,023 of the cost. Tenders had been called for the work.
A request was received from the District Engineer that the council submit applications for additional main highways. On account of heavy commitments this year, the board considered that it would be unable to approve any general increase in the present mileage. Applications for the current year should, therefore, relate only to adjustments of the present system which were considered to have special merit.
It was decided to apply for the Waingawa to Camp and the Manaia-Glad-stone highways to be declared Main Highways. It was stated that Mr O. Shute’s tender of £l7O 19s 6d had been accepted for metalling 24 chains of Lett’s Road. The work is to be held over until the spring.
The District Engineer advised that in view of the lateness of the season, there appeared to be no option but to defer until the spring the metalling of Duffy’s and Ngahape roads. .In the meantime, monetary authority was being issued. A scheme was submitted for bridge renewal and channel improvement to alleviate flood conditions on the Waingawa to Camp Road at Kopuaranga. The estimated cost of the 60ft bridge was £3,742 10s. The Finance Committee’s report was adopted and accounts amounting to £3,295 8s 6d were passed.
