HEARTILY WELCOMED

THE REV F. J. PARKER AND MRS PARKER GATHERING IN METHODIST HALL A warm welcome was extended to the Rev Frederick J. Parker, the new minister of the church, and Mrs Parker, at a social gathering held in the Methodist Hall last night, in connection with the anniversary celebrations. The annual report of the Church Trust, presented by the secretary, Mr F. E. Wells, reviewed the activities of the various branches of the church throughout the year. Regret was expressed at losing the Rev G. F. Stockwell, but a warm welcome was extended to Mr and Mrs Parker, to whom was promised loyalty and co-operation. Mr F. G. Rutter, who presided, referred to the splendid fellowship which had existed in the church during the past year. It was their duty to cultivate that spirit; to share their joys' and to share their problems. Mr Rutter wlecomed, Mr Parker, on behalf of the church.

The Rev J. Davie, minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, Masterton, expressed pleasure at being able to take a part in welcoming Mr Parker, Mr Davie stressed the value to church members, of being loyal to their minister. Sometimes it meant sacrifices, but there was no happiness in life without sacrifices. Mr Davie conveyed his best wishes for the future prosperity of the church, under the guidance of Mr Parker.

Apologies for absence were received from the Rev E. J. Rich, Vicar of St Matthews, and Major J. Mahaffie, of the Salvation Army. In reply, Mr Parker thanked Mr Davie for his kind remarks, and all present for the hearty way in which they had received their new minister and his family. He congratulated the church on its year’s work, and thanked all who had and were continuing to cooperate with him in the church work. In spite of everything about them, they should carry the spirit of Christianity to the people, said Mr Parker. Enjoyable items were contributed by Miss Valmai Davies (pianoforte solos), and Betty Coleman (monologues) Mr William C. Mann (baritone solos) and the church choir. The accompaniments were played by Mrs D. A. Barns.
