SOME DETAILS OF PROGRESS. HON. P. FRASER ADDRESSES TEACHERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. A combined meeting of Educational Institute, Technical Schools Teachers’ Association and Secondary Schools Teachers’ Association was addressed by the Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, this morning. Mr Fraser said that during the two years and five months the Government had been in office, grants amounting to £1,380,066 had been made for school buildings, of which £826,960 was in respect to primary schools. He referred to the increase in size of schoolrooms, increased grants to school committees and restoration of grants to kindergartens and also to the re-entry of five-year-olds. Four additional school medical officers had been appointed, five additional nurses and twelve additional district nurses, whose duties usually include school work. There were now 140 in training as dental clinic nurses and twenty new clinics were being .established in districts where, until now, this service had not been available.' A number of existing clinics had been strengthened so that more children could be treated. Of 282.000 school children of the Dominion. 237,000 had accepted milk and new schemes and extensions arranged included a further 14,600 children. It was estimated that 8,000 Maori children would, in the near future, receive the benefit of the malted milk scheme.
