BASKETBALL

THE GAME IN WAIRARAPA. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. The results of the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s games held on the Wairarapa College courts last Saturday are as follow:— A GRADE. H.S.O.G. I beat College 11, 27/5; College I beat College 111, 18/3; lona beat Technical O.G. 11, 52/0; Stars I beat H. 11, 29/6; Stars II beat T.O.G. I, 25/8. B GRADE. Dalefield beat Stars, 17/2; Carterton beat College 11, 17/0; College I drew with College 111, 4 all; Hospital beat lona, 16/12. It was a day of large scores and somewhat .uneven contests. In the A grade one of the best matches was the Stars Iv. H.S.O.G. II game. The Stars are far more experienced players, and also taller and stronger, but the Old Girls stuck to it in a very game struggle. The play was much more even than the score indicates. The Old Girls need constant practice in handling the ball and are advised to work hard at exercises in their practice time. They were too slow in passing and the forwards failed to get back to their goal. Among the Stars A. Burgess was an excellent defender, strong and sure. J. Jackson, though rather slow in movement, threfv very accurately. There is still too much long passing in the Stars I team. The Stars II v. T.O.G. I match was won by Stars largely through their greatly superior centre play. This match saw two good defenders at work —B. Maxted (Stars) and B. Venner (T.0.G.) The lona v. T.O.G. II was an uneven struggle. The lona club has fielded an excellent A team this year. Among the forwards P. Hanley was most outstanding, quick and determined. She had a good understanding with M. Brady and the partnership worked well. Among the defenders B. Stitt was hardworking and difficult to pass.

In the B grade both Carterton and Dalefield showed up very well indeed. The former had not very strong opposition, but displayed great promise. There was too much long passing, which against a stronger team would have lost them the ball. Letty and Peggy Simmonds (forwards) and D. Smith (defender) were most prominent. The Dalefield teams play caused a considerable amount of interest. These girls have a very good idea of the game and promising team work. The captain, I. Zillwood, is an accurate and active goal thrower. All three centres, D. Garrett, G. Bradbury and E. Garrett were good and missed few opportunities. All teams are asked tc note that there will be no matches next Saturday, but friendly games and practices may be arranged.
