NARROW VICTORY. CARTERTON BEAT GLADSTONE. Carterton just got home from Gladstone, winning by the narrow margin of one point. It was a keen and exciting game in which the work of the Carterton forwards, particularly in the loose, proved to be the deciding factor. Gladstone gave a considerably improved display and with a little luck might have pulled the game out of the fire. At the interval, Gladstone led 3-0, Braddock scoring an unconverted try. The standard of play improved in the second spell, when Carterton showed up to better advantage. They took the lead when Matheson capped a short dribbling rush with a try, which Crawley converted. Gladstone, however, applied the pressure and their efforts were rewarded when Hart scored. An easy kick was missed. Encouraged by this success, Gladstone maintained the attack and following hot play near the Carterton line, Mason slipped round a ' scrum to score an unconverted try. Gladstone looked certain winners when, right on time, Harp started a bright back rush which culminated in Crawley racing across for a try, which he also converted, giving Carterton the game 10-9.
WIN FOR OLD BOYS. GREYTOWN WELL BEATEN Having their first outing, Old Boys, winners of last year’s championship, gave a- good account of themselves to defeat Grey town by 13 points to 7. Play was fast and interesting throughout, both sets of backs showing up to advantage. Old Boys had the speedier line but solid tackling by the Greytown backs kept them fairly well subdued. The forwards were well matched, although Greytown had the edge on their opponents in the loose. Greytown had the better of matters in the opening spell and led 7-5 at the interval, but Old Boys were the fitter team and reversed matters in the second spell. Trass opened Old Boys’ account with a try which O’Callaghan converted, but Brunton then came to light with a penalty and a neat field goal, giving his side a 7-5 lead. Early in the second spell, O’Callaghan kicked a good penalty goal and then Crisp scored and O’Callaghan converted. Play continued at a fast pace but no side sounded wtih the scores unchanged. KEEN CONTEST. MASTERTON WIN WELL. In a keenly contested game in which play was mostly confined to the forwards, Masterton defeated Martinborough by 14 points to 5. There was little to choose between the two teams but Masterton infused more dash into their play and were quick to turn to account lapses on the part of their opponents. , Play was hard and fast throughout and provided the spectators with plenty of interesting incident. Masterton held an 8-5 lead at the interval and they added another five points to their tally in the second spell. Scorers for Masterton were: Gray, Reire, Percy and Osborne, Percy converting one try. Busch scored a try for Martinborough which Ward converted. IN OTHER CENTRES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON.
