RUNS PILED UP
ANOTHER BIG SCORE BADCOCK TOPS CENTURY. AUSTRALIA v. LEICESTER. By Telegraph.—Pi-ess Association. Copyright. LONDON, May 7. The weather for the cricket match, Australia versus Leicester, was cold and dull. The wicket was good and the outfield fast. Dempster won the toss and elected to bat. The Australian team is: McCabe (captain), Fingleton, Badcock, Hassett, Chipperfield, Barnett, O’Reilly, Waite, McCormick, White, Ward. With Badcock enrolled as the fifth century-maker, and apparently time alone preventing Hassett from getting another, the Australians are well on the way to a third victory. While Australia’s out cricket was good enough to dismiss Leicester fairly cheaply, it was less impressive than the batting. McCormick, who brought his total to 49 no-balls, would not have deserved three wickets against sounder batting. Dempster was uncomfortable facing McCormick who was making the ball rise sharply. Early in the game a ball from McCormick struck Berry on the side of the head. He had to be assisted from the field, but resumed after lunch. McCormick ' in the third over struck Dempster on the leg. The crowd shouted, “take him off.” In the same over a ball struck Dempster on the wrist. He dropped the bat, but continued, and was bowled next ball, one of good length, taking the bails. Dempster apparently expected a shorter one. A section of the crowd continued to cry out when McCormick’s deliveries struck batsmen, but they were not on the leg side and not contrary to the spirit of the game. Leicester’s innings lasted 170 minutes.
Fingleton, Badcock and Hassett batted down the Leicester attack. Badcock, persistently aggressive, was seldom troubled. Hassett, proving the batting discovery of this tour, gave a delightful exhibition, showing a wide range of strokes. He was quick on his feet, and with the exception of one lofty hit to fine leg, his display was chanceless. O’Reilly has not yet found his length and Ward is uncertain. Scores:— LEICESTER. Sompton, and J. Smith. ? AN OPTIMISTIC CRITIC. NOT . AFRAID OF AUSTRALIANS. (Recd This Day, 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 3. Howard Marshall, in the “Daily Telegraph,” -says: “We will do cricket a disservice if we- magnify McCormick’s no balls into something sensational. His bowling short is in part due to run up difficulties. I hope it will not lead to any nonsense about bodyline. The Australian victories at Worcester and Oxford are not significant. I have seen nothing to make me fear the Australians unduly.”
