SPEECHES IN ROME
TWO DICTATORS EXCHANGE ASSURANCES ABANDONMENT OF UTOPIA MUSSOLINI ON INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION By Telegraph. —Press Association, Copyright. ROME, May 7. Two hundred persons attended a banquet to Herr Hitler in the Palazzo Vienzia. Signor Mussolini, welcoming Herr Hitler, declared: “This visit seals the German-Italian understanding, which we so firmly willed and tenaciously constructed, and which has an historic function in parallel and permanent interests for our nations. “Fascist ’ltaly knows only one ethical law of friendship, which is obtained by German Italian collaboration, consecrated in the Rome-Berlin axis. “Italy and Germany have abandoned the Utopias to which Europe had blindly entrusted its fortunes in order to seek between ourselves, and with others, a regime of international cooperation, which may erect more effective guarantees of justice, security and equitable peace. This can only be reached when the elementary rights of each people to live, work, and defend itself are loyally recognised, and political equilibrium corresponds with historical realities.”
Herr Hitler, responding, said: — “Nazism and Fascism have created two new, powerful nations, a bloc of 120 millions, who are determined to preserve the eternal right to live and protect their equal interests and ideological unity against all forces endeavouring to resist their natural development.
“It is my unshakeable will and legacy to Germany that it forever regards the Italian-German alpine frontier as inviolable. Just as you and the Italians preserved friendship towards Germany in decisive days, so shall I and by people show Italy friendship in a serious hour.”
Rain and bad visibility led to the postponement of the air display for Herr Hitler. MUTUAL HELP FACILITATING PERMANENT PEACE. HITLER ON ITALO-GERMAN FRIENDSHIP. (Recd This Day, 9.15 a.m.) ROME, May 8. Herr Hitler, at a banquet in Rome, said: —“Italy and Germany had to defend themselves against a world filled with opposition and lack of understanding, and gradually a cordial friendship has developed between the two peoples the solidarity of which has been tested by events in recent years. These events have demonstrated to the world that the legitimate and vital interests of great nations must in all cases be taken into account. It is selfapparent that our work of understanding will go forward. I know that fo* Italy and Germany there is a great and fruitful future. Italy and Germany together not only facilitate permanent peace, but with their guaranteed cooperation will form a bridge of mutual help and support.” “ROMAN EAGLES.” HITLER WATCHES AIR DISPLAY. (Recd This Day, 10.0 a.m.) ROME; May 3. Herr Hitler, gazing skyward at three hundred manoeuvring aeroplanes, complimented Signor Mussolini, in the presence of King Victor Emmanuel, on his “Roman eagles,” when the postponed air display was held at Furbara Aerodrome.
