BUTTER AND MEAT

LONDON MARKET CONDITIONS

LONDON, May 7 Butter fluctuated awkwardly during the week. The demand quietened but prices should be maintained around the present figure in view of the low New Zealand gradings and the reduction in Australian shipments. Every movement of the market, however, is being watched with considerable nervousness and speculators are almost entirely absent. Frozen lamb are fully a halfpenny a lb higher than those of a year ago. Stocks are lower and consumption is higher. The trade sees no reason for a break for some weeks, though homekilled will become more plentiful at the end of the month. The settlement of the Irish question is also expected to affect prices later. In contrast to lamb, beef is declining owing to heavy shipments from the Dominions, and prices are sometimes unremunerative to shippers.
