COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF EKETAHUNA COUNCIL. PROPOSED RABBIT BOARD. (“Times-Age” .Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council held yesterday there were present Messrs J. B. Carruthers (chairman), C. T. Richardson, G. Olivant, A. E. Brittain, L. Houlbrooke, F. N. Goggin, C. E. Goss, H. M. Kebbell, R. W. Kebbell and W. O. Twentyman. The treasurer reported balances as follow: County fund, credit £llOl 17s 4d; bridges loan £3OOO, credit £366 2s 3d; bridges loan, £BOOO, credit £6758 12s 9d; housing loan, £lBOO, credit £274 12s 2d; housing loan £1550, credit £ 79i Is 6d; bridge fund, credit £B5 14s. Accounts totalling £2519 13s were passed. The tender of Mr H. M. Hansen was accepted for the lease of a reserve. Mr G. Farrow and another wrote asking for permission to remove a fence on an unformed road.
The Masterton Borough Council advised that the matter of setting up a committee to discuss with the Eketahuna County Council the terms of the latter taking over the Mangaone Reserve had been left to the incoming council.
The Highways Board advised that on account of heavy commitments this year the board was not in a position to consider any general scheme of new highways. Minor adjustments, however, would be considered, such as special expenses or connections of existing highways of a special character.
It was decided that Hamua-Hukanui, Hare’s and South No. 2 roads be applied for, the two latter on the suggestion of Councillor Goggin. The Main’ Highways Board advised that it was not proposed to take any steps at present in respect to the improvement of the stock route on No. 15 Highway. The Masterton committee asked for an opinion as to the constitution of a rabbit board district comprising the six Wairarapa counties. The matter was referred to the incoming council. The tender of Mr O. E. Farrelly was accepted for a reserve at Newman.
The Main Highway Board advised that in future the subsidy on main highways bridges would be £3 for £l. The resignation of Mi’ W. Duffill as assistant engineer, as from May 31, was accepted with regret. Members paid a warm tribute to the worth of his services.
