FEATHERSTON
HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual report of the Haunui Croquet Club states inter alia: —The Wairarapa Tournament in November was held on the Featherston, Haunui and Martinborough lawns, and was managed by Mrs Wakely with Mrs Brophy (secretary). Miss Eva Card was the only one of our members who was successful when she and her partner, Mrs Walker won the Handicap Doubles. Mrs McGill was runner-up in the Handicap Singles. Congratulations are extended to these players. During the season the Intermediate Buttons were won from Martinborough. The B Brooches were held by our players for the greater part of the season, after which they lost them to the Featherston Club. The inter-club matches this season have been most interesting, teams of four meeting for the day and playing two doubles and four singles. Our A team was only two points below the winners of the Shield and the B team was successful in winning their shield. The Riddiford Cup was this year won by Mrs Barry, with Miss M. Nix runner-up, and the Haunui Cup by Mrs Shand With Mrs McGill runner-up. The C championship, for which a silver cup was kindly donated by Miss Eva Card, was won by Mrs Hankers with Mrs White runner-up. The A and B Wairarapa Champion of Champions were won, respectively, by Mrs Barry and Mrs Shand and we heartily congratulate both players. We also congratulate Mrs Barry on winning the Handicap Singles at the Dominion Tournament held at Wanganui. The thanks of the. Club are due to all donors of trophies and to the members who have given their assistance during the season and to the Press and the auditor (Mr Nicie). PRESENTATION TO MR STILL. Members of the Featherston Cricket Club visited Mr S. G. Still on Wednesday when a very pleasant evening was spent. Mr F. Dohnt (captain), presented Mr Still with a travelling rug as a token of esteem. In replying, Mr Still expressed his appreciation of the gift and wished the club success in its future operations. Mr Still has been transferred to Otorohanga. He will be succeeded on the staff of the local school by Mr W. Willett, of Dillon’s Point. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr Terrence Taylor, who underwent a serious operation at the Wellington Hospital recently, is reported to be making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr J. Bloxam, who has been in a private hospital in Wellington, is expected home today. WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB. The monthly meeting of the Stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club was held on Thursday. There were present: Messrs Q. Donald (chairman), D. Cameron, D. C. Collins, T. Benton, C. J. Nix, Roy Donald, R. A. Donald, W. Howard Booth, J. W. Card and H. Lawson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs D. H. S. Riddiford, R. N. Barton, A. C. Pearce and W. J. Martin.
Receipts since last meeting totalled £8,254 12s Bd. Accounts amounting to £744 14s 4d were passed for payment. It was resolved to place £5OO in the P.O. Savings Bank. Two new members were elected. The president of the Manawatu Racing Club wrote expressing appreciation of the cordial reception and valuable information so freely given to members of their committee who recently visited the race course. The chairman reported that the members of the Manawatu Club wished to inspect the club’s buildings and gain some knowledge of how the trainers and boys were catered for. The Deputy Stipendiary Steward reported that the recent meeting was well conducted and that events were run well to schedule: Mr J. E. Montgomerie, Greytown, forwarded a copy of the club’s balance sheet for the race meeting held in January, 1888. It was resolved to thank Mr Montgomerie for forwarding this very interesting document. An application from Mr L. A. Crawford for a trainer's licence was recommended. It was resolved that the committee appointed to go into the question of a new building meet and report at next meeting. It was also resolved that samples of a new saddle cloth be procured. It was resolved to grade the road leading from No. 1 line and to build a loading bank in the vicinity of the accommodation house.
