MANY CONGRATULATIONS

DIAMOND WEDDING CELEBRATED. MR AND MRS J. PICKETT. Friends from all parts of the Wairarapa gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Pickett, Lincoln Road, yesterday, to congratulate them on the occasion of their diamond wedding. Among many messages of congratulation was a cable from their Majesties, the King and Queen.

Mr Pickett, who is 82 years old, said it was a great pleasure to see so many friends present. He and Mrs Pickett had been through “tough” daj’s, and they had met them with pretty “tough" old hearts. The worst times were when they were short of food, which was not an uncommon experience for pioneers.

The text of some of the many messages received was as follows: — Buckingham Palace: The King and Queen send you hearty congratulatifins and good wishes on your diamond wedding day. Lord Galway: Lady Galway and I send you our warmest congratulations and best wishes on the celebration today of the sixtieth anniversary of your marriage.

The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage: I understand you are today celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of your wedding, and I desire to congratulate you on the occasion. I extend to you my best wishes for your future happiness and prosperity. The mayor, Mr T. Jordan: I understand tomorrow brings to you the sixtieth anniversary of your wedding, and I would like to send my very sincere congratulations to you on this event. I hope the day will set a new record for your joint happiness and that your journey along the downward slope of life will be one of peace and contentment for you both. Mr C. E. Daniell, a pioneer settler of the town: May I join the many who today will be congratulating you on the record made in 60 years of married life and work. Being about your age— I was a new-chum to Masterton in January, 1880—1 early learnt of the doings of Jack Pickett and Will lorns with the bullock whip . . . You will today, reflecting, feel satisfaction and pride.
