DRINKING AT DANCES

CONCERN AT GROWING INCIDENCE VIEW OF BOROUGH CANDIDATES Concern at the growing incidence of drinking during the progress of public dances in the Municipal halls, was expressed by several speakers at the meeting .of Masterton electors last night. The matter was raised by Mr C. R. Goudge, a candidate for the council, who gave an assurance that if he were elected he would see that women and girls were not subjected to humiliation by drunken persons at dances. He did not know if there was a by-law prohibiting drinking in the halls, but if there were, it was not put into effect. Members of the retiring council were very keen to get over the trouble, remarked the deputy-Mayor, Mr W. White. They had an honest desire to keep the place clean. The council had done everything humanly possible to carry out the wishes contained in a recent communication from interested persons regarding drinking in the halls.

During his seven years on the Hall Committee, observed Councillor R. Russell, members had done their best to stop liquor from being brought into the halls. The police had been unable to cope with the trouble. If he were returned he would again do his utmost to stop it.
