FLOODS IN THE NORTH
KAIPARA FLATS AND HOTEO AREAS INUNDATED. RAILWAY COMMUNICATIONS SEVERED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 3. Railway communication to the north has been severed as the result of extensive flooding between the Kaipara Flats and Hoteo, and no indication could be given by rail officials tonight as to when services would be resumed. At a late hour the line at Hoteo was covered to a depth of four feet, the station platform and the floor of the! goods shed being submerged. Rain was still falling heavily and flood waters were continuing to rise. The East Coast highway remains open, however. Flooding has occurred on other roads in the north, but there has been no serious dislocation on main arterial routes.
During the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. today, 8.52 inches of rain fell at Whangarei, one of the heaviest falls in one day since the keeping of records was begun in 1911. Actually the fall occured between noon yesterday and 7 a.m. today. Once again little or no damage was done in the town, but a great deal of inconvenience was caused, and business people and householders in lowlying areas were given cause for anxiety. Water invaded several houses, and many others were completely surrounded by water.
