A manifestation of Nature in which mysterious light played its part was experienced by a party which made a recent trip to the Sounds on board
the Ranui. This occurred (says the Bluff correspondent of the “Southland News”) while the vessel was steaming along in pitch darkness. Suddenly, the Ranui ran into a mysterious purplish glow which illuminated everything on the sea. Every part of the little vessel became silhouetted against the sky and sea, and everything on board was visible in a ghostly light. The light remains a scientific mystery, but its source is not so. it emanates from vast schools of
jellyfish, and the apparition is not altogether singular to those who follow the sea as their life mission. Apparently. the whole surface of the sea becomes luminiscent and everything becomes tricked out against what can scarcely be described as “light.”
