BADMINTON
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES. REPORT FOR PAST YEAR. The fourth annual report of the Wairarapa Badminton Association states that the 1937 season was a successful one from every viewpoint, particularly in respect to the continued increase in playing membership and the further general improvement in the standard of play. The report continues: “Affiliations: Carterton, Red Stars and Saint Matthew’s Clubs were granted affiliation, whilst the Old Boys’ Club disbanded, these changes bringing the number of affiliated clubs to twelve with a total playing membership of 307 as follows, the previous season’s memberships being shown in parentheses: —Carterton 21 ( —); Central 27 (30); Defence 26 (23); Featherston 20 (20); Knox 20 (32); Martinborough 34 (25); Masterton 30 (34); Methodist 32 (36); Nomads 21 (21); Red Star 26 (—); Regent 20 (21); St. Matthew’s 30 (—); Old Boys — (30); total 307 (272). “Inter-club Competition: A and B grade inter-club competitions were played during the season, Masterton Club again being successful in the A grade whilst Central scored a win in the B grade which was particularly closely contested. Tournament: The Association’s third annual tournament was held in Masterton between Wednesday, August 4 and Saturday, August 7, 1937. Again thirteen events were decided, these drawing a total of 172 entries as compared with 148 in the previous tournament. The event winners were as follow:—Men’s Championship Singles, P. Hawksworth; Men’s Championship Doubles, F. Hawksworth and J. K. Logan; Ladies’ Championship Singles, Mrs P. Hawksworth; Ladies’ Championship Doubles, Mrs Hawksworth and Miss P. Ball; Combined Championship Doubles, Mrs Hawksworth and P. Hawksworth; Men’s Handicap Singles, P. Martin; Ladies’ Handicap Singles, Miss N. Payton; Men’s Handicap Doubles A Grade, O. Grant and P. Martin; Ladies’ Handicap Doubles A Grade, Misses N. and B. Pay ton; Combined Handicap Doubles A Grade, N. Payton and Miss Phillips; Men’s Handicap Doubles B Grade, A. Handyside and C. Greenwood; Ladies’ Handicap Doubles B Grade, Misses E. Madsen and B. Welsh; Combined Handicap Doubles B Grade, Miss N. Woodhouse and N. Ninnes. INTER-ASSOCIATION MATCHES. “The Wairarapa A team was successful in a match against the Manawatu representatives played at Masterton, and the B team also enjoyed success against a Hawke's Bay representative B team which journeyed to Masterton. Wairarapa was also represented in the annual inter-association tournament at Palmerston North, the team finishing in third place. The undermentioned players represented the Association during the season: —A Representatives: Mrs P. Hawksworth, Misses D. Allen, B. Bright, P. Dixon, L. Hosking, P. Kilmister, B. Payton, Messrs O. Grant, P. Hawksworth, J. K. Logan, P. Martin, H. M. O'Connor, J. Payton, F. Roff, L. Wilson. B Representatives: Misses P. Bali, N. Cohen, M. Elkins, B. Payton, N. Payton, E. Wickens, Messrs O. Grant, M. Jones, P. Martin, G. Newland. G. Petersen. L. Roil. “Finance: The general financial position remains satisfactory, a surplus being recording for the year’s working. General: Our congratulations are due to P. Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth on their successes in the New Zealand Championship and North Island Championship Tournament and to Miss L. Hosking and J. Payton on their success in the North Island Tournament. We wish to thank our honourary auditor. Mr N. H. James. Mr Rogers of the Defence Department, the Press and all others who have assisted the Association during the year.” The report is signed for the committee by Mr H. M. A. Major, president, and Mr E. K. Eastwood, honorary secretary.
