CLERICAL WORKERS

EXEMPTIONS GRANTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association, WELLINGTON, May 2. Most of today’s hearing of the claim for an award for clerical workers in the Northern, Wellington (within 25 miles), Westland, Otago and Southland industrial districts before the second Court of Arbitration, at Wellington, was devoted to applications for exemptions. The hearing will be continued tomorrow and is expected to conclude on Wednesday. Mr T. O. Bishop appeared as agent for the employers, and Messrs W. H. Pharazyn and J. 11. Herbert for the employees. It was agreed to exempt trading banks, law clerks and all local body officers in the North Island and Marlborough from the claims, no opposition being offered by Mr Pharazyn Several other applications for exemption were heard and others are pending.
