BOY SCOUTS
♦ FUND LAUNCHED IN GREAT BRITAIN KING AND QUEEN HEAD LIST. OFFER BY LORD NUFFIELD. (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, April 30. A Boy Scout Fund, headed by a subscription from the King and Queen, was launched at a meeting at Mansion House, attended by the Duke of Kent and presided over by the Lord Mayor. It is 30 years since the movement was initiated by the Chief Scout, Lord Baden Powell, and if has spread to 48 countries. It is today a brotherhood of the world’s youth, numbering over 3,000,000. Since the beginning of scouting, units of troops have been largely self-sup-porting, but the expense of training adult helpers—in the United Kingdom there are 65,000 ■ voluntary workers — falls on headquarters, which is also responsible for the purchase and upkeep of camping sites and for specialised work among crippled boys, blind and homeless and the sons of unemployed. It costs Boy Scout headquarters £25,000 annually to guide and help the movement, which exceeds income by £7,500, and deficits are at present made good out of legacies and capital. The aim of the present fund is to place scouting on a sound basis for all time. Lord Nuffield, a Press Association message states, has promised Lord Somers, Deputy-Chief Scout, £50,000 for the Boy Scouts appeal, provided the fund reaches the objective of £500,000.
